Happy St. Nicholas Day! St. Nicholas - Bishop of Myra and the person on whom the legend of Santa Claus is based - was also present at the Council of Nicaea in the 4th century. During the council, an Egyptian bishop, Arius, argued that Jesus was not on equal level with God, the Father, and so was not divine. As Arius spoke, Nicholas became so incensed that he stood up, walked across the room, and slapped Arius.
I have been in Southern California this week and while I have not run into any heretics, I have come across a number of people who probably could benefit from a slap upside the head for being stupid. Did I mention I'm a Family Law attorney? Did I also mention that most cases would be resolved and cost less money if people just acted like adults and used common sense?
So if St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children and gives them gifts, let him also be the same for immature adults with grandiose senses of entitlement and inflated perceptions about their own importance in the universe . . . but they get a well-earned slap to knock some sense and some manners into them.
