A sex-abuse and cover-up lawsuit against former Monsignor Michael Harris, a once-popular and high-profile figure who left the priesthood when Orange County's clergy scandal erupted a decade ago, is set to go to trial June 18 in Orange County Superior Court.
This is disheartening news. But not as disheartening as this:

Also that year, a psychological report prepared by doctors at the Saint Luke Institute, a church-run facility for troubled clerics, concluded that there was substance to allegations from several of Harris' accusers. Psychiatrists at Saint Luke also determined that Harris was sexually attracted to adolescent boys, records show.
The question is whether the Diocese knew that Harris had actually molested children. The fact that he was sexually attracted to adolescent boys does not provide enough evidence - at least, criminally - to sustain a determination of such.
But let us assume that then Bishop McFarland did not know. Was it really thought to be such an isolated case that no further scrutiny within the Diocese was warranted? I have to think that to address a problem such as is this requires more than nailing a sheet of paper with promises on it to a cathedral door (at the time, I was confused by such a "Lutheran" gesture by a Catholic prelate) - it really has to start with priestly formation in the seminary.
I have not heard good stories of St. John's Seminary in Camarillo. I know of at least one instance where a priest on the faculty there made sexual advances to a seminarian. I have heard stories that the seminary - and ultimately the Diocese of Orange - is largely controlled by "the Pink Mafia," that is, a group of priests who are gay and look the other way when a brother priest may engage in questionable behavior. I do not know if this is true; however, such a story is supported when you consider how long Rod Stephens lived openly with his gay lover while remaining in active ministry. I recall when Fr. Cesar Salazar was removed from ministry at St. Joseph Church, my former parish, when child pornography was found on a laptop he once owned. But the pornography was discovered in 2001, at which time the Diocese allowed Salazar to remain at St. Joseph but placed him on "restrictive" ministry, to include not "interacting" with the parish school kids - a fact that was not revealed to us parishioners until his removal two years later. During those two years I personally witnessed Fr. Cesar interacting with the school kids, including my own.
Why? Why wouldn't the Diocese take more precautionary action, or at least disclose the possibility of risk? Charity? Social justice? At one time a fellow school mom came up to me at St. Joseph with a picture from Megan's List, California's sexual offender database, that showed a fellow parishioner. We took it to the pastor - and I found out that the former pastor knew this person was a registered sexual offender but nonetheless allowed him to serve as a minister of the Holy Eucharist at Mass, placing him in proximity to children in the Sacristry, and did not even inform his successor that such a person was in the congregation (fortunately, his successor removed the person from that ministry).
What causes this failure to act? I really have to look back at formation. Let me liken it to becoming an attorney. In law school, we are taught ethics seriously. Yes, stop laughing, I know the lawyer jokes, but ethics is a serious matter to the point where aspirants to the bar must even pass a separate test, apart from the bar exam, on ethics and professional behavior. This is done because of the duty that a lawyer assumes when he or she represents a client. And, despite the horror stories, most lawyers are ethical.
So, too, do priests assume a higher standard of duty than the average person. They are called to serve the Body of Christ, that is, the Church and all of its members. What is missing in the formation of some priests that any threat or risk to that Body is ignored, or worse, purposely hidden. Arguably, the pedophile has an "excuse" - he suffers from a psychological disorder. I do not say that to justify his actions - they are horrible - but those that shield him do not have such an excuse.
I love my Church. I love its priests. And I love justice - let it prevail at this trial.
St. Thomas More, pray for the Court.
St. John Vianney, pray for our priests.
Blessed Virgin Mary, pray for us.
Amen. (+)
As a final thought, the article in the Register received the usual ignorant comments about "if they just let priests marry, this wouldn't happen." Please, pedophilia is a disorder that cannot be "cured" by marriage, and to say so is as ignorant as saying homosexuality can be "cured" in a like fashion (and no, I do not equate homosexuality with pedophilia, just the stupidity people can express regarding both). Also, for the record, any priest who remains true to his vows - whether he be straight or gay - and works to be holy and make his people holy, is okay by me.

This disheartens me as well...There are a lot of changes that need to be made...I'll address them in a blog entry :)...
Harris creeped me out before the shit hit the fan - he wouldn't look you in the eye.
Thanks for this information! There is no excuse for the reckless disregard Bishop Brown and his high-priced attorneys have publicly exhibited, especially as it relates to their failures to protect children from all types of danger. Destroying the reputations and careers of Whistleblower employees who follow the law and report as mandated by law, are also crimes! Brown, his attorneys and employees have a track record of destroying the lives of anyone who dares to tell the truth and report as mandated by law!
Tragically, the same Diocese of Orange employees and attorneys that ENABLED Harris to sexually abuse minors at Mater Dei and then Santa Margarita Catholic HS, are still on the Diocese of Orange payroll and retirement plan--in sum, these employees were REWARDED for cover up of not only sex crimes against children, but placing children in danger of another Columbine HS shooting tragedy and MULTIPLE civil rights violations.
Shame on you Bishop Brown... but most important, shame on the OC District Attorney and OC Sheriff for failing to step up and prosecute failures to protect the civil rights of children and adults. I pray that JUSTICE will prevail and that Harris, along with Diocese of Orange employees and attorneys that violated multiple laws, and escaped criminal prosecution, will be held monetarily accountable via punitive damages in this trial.
The Diocese of Orange, Bishop Brown and his attorneys only care about wealth and power.... the civil rights of children and the faithful in the pews have never been a priority. In a society of decent human beings, corrupt legal advisors and failures of local district attorneys would NOT be tolerated. Yet, in Orange County, CA, one of the most affluent areas in the world to live and raise children, elected and appointed government/law enforcement officials have never been held accountable for serious crimes against the public's safety. Lots of words.... sham litigation and pretending to implement sex offender prohibitions in public parks are a disgrace.
To the OC District Attorney, OC Sheriff and OC Board of Supervisors: Investigate and prosecute crimes when they are committed, in accordance with the laws already on the books.... stop wasting tax dollars implementing laws that will never be enforced!
If someone had done the right thing from Day One, Michael Harris, along with many other Diocese of Orange employees would be in prison today.... and Whistleblower employees would NOT fear personal, financial and career ruin for reporting child protection violations.
ALL CHILDREN DESERVE PROTECTION!
Heckuva job, Brownie!
Last year there was a report of a priest having sex with a child in the bathroom of St. Joseph Church, the one in Santa Ana. Did Brown ever do anything about that? Did anyone call the police?
To Anonymous.... The upcoming public trial is long over due--not just because of the alleged cover ups by Diocese of Orange Bishops, attorneys and rewarded employees, but to demand a public court record of the true failures of Bishop Brown's ENABLERS and all the crimes that continue even today.
Whatever alleged crime occurred at St. Joseph Church in Santa Ana last year.... you can bet your life that Brown and his General Counsel Maria Schinderle have already covered their asses and destroyed whatever evidence or reports that were made--of course, this is personal opinion based on public information available to date. And, if a Diocese of Orange employee has knowledge of wrongdoing and dares to participate in a law enforcement investigation or prosecution, another life and career will be destroyed. The patterns of abuse continue because no one is ever held accountable..... especially a member of the OC Republican GOP who is Catholic or a member of the good 'ol boy network.... just ask TRack, and Mr. and Mrs. Schroeder.
NOTE: The OC District Attorney, the OC Sheriff, and the OC Board of Supervisors will NEVER hold Diocese of Orange attorneys and employees accountable for failures to report, as mandated by law. Why? Because they all SIMULTANEOUSLY retain the same attorneys and law firms to defend them. How convenient is that?
If by chance you are a parent of a child that was abused by a Diocese of Orange priest or employee, do you feel confident in reporting the crime to the OC Sheriff or OC District Attorney knowing that the same law firm that represents the Diocese of Orange also represents the OC Sheriff's Department? Or, do you feel comfortable expressing concerns to the OC Board of Supervisors when they have repeatedly appointed known pedophile protectors to County commissions/boards?
I pray that someone will report accurately each and every fact that is revealed during the upcoming trial.... tragically, the trial in my opinion is 10 years too late to help some of the individuals that needed help from those in positions of authority and trust.
This is a great source of information. Thank you to the host of this blog! I have personally witnessed and documented the evils that have destroyed many lives, all while supervised by Bishop Brown and his high-priced legal advisors, along with the world's religious leaders that refuse to face truth. Don't believe that all the crimes occurred long before Brown appeared in the OC....the truth will hopefully and soon be revealed.
Michael Harris and the school administrators that worked with him at Mater Dei and Santa Margarita Catholic HS (Dougherty, Dominguez, Peterson, Schaaf, Moody, Hartigan, Urell, Baird, and many backroom legal advisors) most likely know all the dirty secrets, and they are GAINFULLY EMPLOYED FOR LIFE--what a gig if you can live with yourself.
If anyone dares to tell the truth and expose the evil, they will be treated just like every other employee who followed the law--DESTRUCTION always follows--evil crimes committed by Catholic insiders must be dirty secrets. After one lie, then comes another and another.... the cycle continues until someone collapses with guilt.
When religious institutions have so much power and influence in the world, enjoying TAX EXEMPT status and lives with little wants or needs, pretending that precious children were never sexually abused for decades and the 2002 National Charter for the Protection of Children has changed everything, something very evil possesses our society.
Only the federal government and public trials like the one scheduled for June 18, 2012 will clean up the filth that continues... pray for justice.
God bless the courageous victims, their families and a handful of attorneys who still believe that God's most precious gift to the world are all children. Harris, along with many many many others, deserve to ROT IN HELL for the crimes they have committed and covered up. Bishop Brown had a chance to make a difference and he made a choice to place money and negligent legal advice to safe his reputation. Truth will prevail.

I do know about the incident last year at St. Joseph. It was investigated by both the Diocese and Santa Ana PD. At the time of the alleged incident, both priests at St. Joseph - Fr. John Moneypenny and Fr. Leonel Vargas - were physically absent from the church. It was determined that nothing happened.
Thanks for the update.... however, was CPS called? The Diocese of Orange has NO BUSINESS investigating alleged sex abuse allegations, based on the history of the religious institution to date.
Also, if it was a fraudulent report, was anyone charged with making a false report to law enforcement?
Too many questions that are still unanswered..... the Diocese is NOT CREDIBLE to investigate its own employees.... cycles of abuse continue, without corrective sanctions.
I do not know if CPS was called. I cannot speak to any other facts due to attorney-client confidentiality.
I will say this. I used to have a very close friendship with Fr. Moneypenny. He is still considered a member of my family, albeit one who is estranged from us. I can say that he never displayed any conduct or said anything that would lead me to believe he is a risk to any child, and I believe that today.
Ce criss de fif!
@The Digital Hairshirt - I could say the same about Father Cesar. I left the area years ago and am barely finding out about the accusations, etc.
To be honest, I knew he was gay but being gay is no where near the same as being a pedophile so I am having a very hard time believing the accusations.
Le sigh. Has he removed from totally?
Thanks for any information you have.
Em
Em,
It is my understanding that Cesar Salazar is no longer in the priesthood and is at school, working towards a certification as a therapist.
He was gay, really? Okay, I am being facetious. To be honest, however, it is unclear when a heterosexual priest was last in charge at that church - not that there is anything wrong with a gay priest so long as Father remains faithful to his vows.
When was the last time there was a straight priest at that parish? I'd say Fr. Steve Sallot.
