This Place Matters

Look at this photograph.  Do you recognize the person?

Until today, I did not know that actor George Takei - Mr. Sulu of Star Trek fame - was imprisoned as a boy in one of the internment camps where the government placed Japanese-Americans during World War II.  Korematsu was a bad decision and what we did was a disgrace.

Yes, Mr. Takei, that place does matter.  Our history of World War II is being lost more and more.  Go talk to your average teenager and see how astonishing little they know of that time.  I am grateful for someone like George Takei - who has reemerged as a well-known figure in popular culture for this younger generation - to keep this in our memory.

BTW, this was taken at an internment camp in Desha County, Arkansas.  See?  I always thought that the camps were in the Western states.

Well done, sir.
