Try freezing the hard drive. Put it in the freezer for a day. Take it out and immediately connect it to your computer. The idea is that freezing the drive will contract the internal parts which could bring it back to life. However, this "new life" will be short lived. Be ready to quickly copy the important files to another hard drive or thumb drive. It's worked for me. No guarantees, but it's worth a shot and it's free. Hope it works. God bless.
Thanks, Island Boy. But I am too skittish about this data, so I think I'll bite the bullet and see what a local firm can do. It sounds, though, from the advice I've gotten overall, that the data is more than likely recoverable. I hope so! Because the data on he is priceless!
