Becuase that is what hairshirts are made to do. Actually, it is discomfort for the sake of mortification, that is, allowing one to resist the temptations of the flesh. The word cilice originally referred to a hairshirt, coming from the Latin word for "goat hair." Now it includes lashes, inctures, and other means of carnal mortification.
Mind you, I suspect that if you are into masochism . . . this isn't going to work. If your motto is "Screw the roses, send me the thorns!" you might want to consider something else.
Anyway, I have found a shop in the UK from which such means of discipline can be purchased!
Seriously, a waist cilice might be just the trick for a success diet!
