Down the drain . . .

I hate other priests who tell me I’m on a slippery slope for not saying the Liturgy of the Hours — That’s a direct quote from a priest who just told that to me out of the blue about what another priest told him, making him flabergasted with moments of spittleflected livid anger.

That same priest, some months later — after he had been caught out doing something terribly, terribly wrong — told me, “I don’t know why I did that.” He was just as flabergasted, but instead of anger, was shaking with fear, his voice quivering. A bit of a fright, really.

I think sin is a lot like putting on weight you don't need.  You don'tt go from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds like a Mrecedes-Benz.  It's gradual.  You take a little shortcut here, and then another one there, and the next thing you know . . . you have fucked up.

This blog post points this out nicely for priests but the lesson is there for everyone.  But I would like to add, just as I didn't gain 30 extra pounds overnight, it will not be lost overnight as well.  This morning I had the opportunity to talk to my priest.  He likened working on reconciliation like climbing Mt. Laconte, here locally in the Great Smoky Mountains - the road rises, and then the road dips, and sometimes it is easy flat hiking, and then rocks get in the way . . . but eventually, you reach the top.  So too with making changes in your life for the better.  Sometimes it is time to get back to the basics . . . such as remembering your childhood and ending each day with a simple "God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, God bless my dog, God bless my bestest friend . . ."
