Saw the movie last night. Unless you live under a rock, everyone has heard of either this movie or the book by the late Stieg Larssen. It is a crime thriller set in Sweden (yah!) and stars Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, and Christopher Plummer. There is also a major character played by Stellan SkarsgÄrd, who I swore, while watching the movie, was the same guy who played the butler in Trading Places. Don't ask me how to pronounce his last name.
What I learned from the film:
- I can never listen to Enya the same again.
- Swedes smoke and drink both coffee and alcohol pretty much every waking minute of the day.
- Evidently, laws are so lax you can get away with rape and justice is only served by your victim.
- Speaking of which, she does so quite violently. However, I would advise you not to watch this if you were a rape victim, especially if it was incestuous. I am not and I was uncomfortable watching these scenes.
- When it's winter in Sweden, it's fucking bleak.
- And finally . . . no one's computer is 100% secure.
Do I recommend it? Yes, if you liked the book and crime thrillers in general. But I have my reservations. No, I would NOT take a teen to see this and you will have to have a strong stmach. There is a LOT of nudity - in fact, more than was needed, IMHO - and sex scenes, both heterosexual and lesbian. In fact, far less gore than one would expect and more sex, sex, and more sex. That has to be my one biggest complaint - the script is good, the acting is good, but really, how many times do we have to see Mara's tiny tits?
Will say this - the rapist looks like every American literature/acting/sociology professor I've run across in universities.

I don't know why this movie was even made in English, there is a version available from Redbox, with subtitles. I was not comfortable watching this movie. I do not recommend that anyone watch it.
I watched all 3 films when they were done in Swedish. That's the version Marquis is talking about, I believe. I 'enjoyed' the foreign films and wonder how the Hollywood version stacks up. Though there were parts that I definitely fast forwarded through.
Saw the movie in Swedish - plenty of violence and sex and it is difficult to watch - but I did not think that it was overdone considering the subject. I liked the movie - good mystery - great suspense - with enough sex and violence to keep your gut wrenched, but IMO not overdone.
Sometimes American films want to slam the graphic shit into your face - I do not know if that is the case here. I am interested in seeing the American version.
I love the movie The girl with a dragon tattoos watch this full movies

I watched a dubbed version of the Swedish movie, then I saw the English version, and now I'm reading the book. (Kind of backwards, I guess.) I thought the English version was more "in your face" with the sex and rape scenes to the point of making me VERY uncomfortable but, considering the subject matter, that may have been the intent. I also thought that although the movies were essentially the same they sometimes highlighted different subplots from the book which ultimately provided a fuller picture of the story. Definitely not for teens!
