Tonight in the United Kingdom, one can expect bonfires and fireworks for Guy Fawkes Day. It is, in essence, an anti-Catholic, anti-Pope holiday, commemorating the failed attempt by Catholic Nationalist, Guy Fawkes, to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.
Remember, remember, the 5th of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot ;
I know of no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
... Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes,
'Twas his intent.
To blow up the King and the Parliament.
Three score barrels of powder below.
Poor old England to overthrow.
By God's providence he was catch'd,
With a dark lantern and burning match. . .
And thus was spared the life of King James I of England, aka King James VI of Scotland, who was baptized and raised a Catholic but gladly through aside his faith to inherit the throne from his bastard cousin, Elizabeth I, the woman who had previously killed his mother, Mary, Queen of Scots.
Now, the tradition of celebration on this date was to cheer the defeat of Catholicism in the land. So it seems fitting to remember also an attempt to install jihad here, when Maj. Nidal Hasan opened fire on fellow soldiers and civilians, killing 13 - including an unborn child - and wounding 29 others. Except some would argue it wasn't jihad, there was no religious motivation in Hasan's actions . . . notwithstanding his angry shouts of "Allahu akbar!" as he fired his weapon. After all, Obama's first statement about the massacre at Ft. Hood was to warn us not to "jump to conclusions."
Remember, remmeber, the Fifth of November . . .
