My friend in Phoenix, the famous Buzz Bannister, posted his personal reflection as a letter to the mostly white, middle-class college kids trying to overcome "corporate greed" in New York. Maybe if I put the hashtag #occupywallstreet, some of them might see this via their smart phones and iPads . . .
Dear Occupy Wall Street,
I have been seeing pictures of "college students" holding up signs about how much they owe and how hard their life is. There are three children in my life that I love dearly and none of them are angry or bitter even after their mother and I divorced when they were young. Angela is a glorious, beautiful woman raising to beaut...iful children, holding down her job and going through life with that same sweet smile she had when I met her mother in the early 80's. Parker went to college working fill time on a pig farm to help pay for school and after working for a mining company he joined the Seabees, protected people around the world while building them schools & hospitals. Now that he is out of the service he is going to school to be a high altitude helicopter pilot with the hope of a career as an air ambulance pilot with special altitude training. Then there is my darling Johanna who has the strongest courage and the dearest heart of anyone I know. She bought her own home at 20 with no help married and loves a husband and goes to work everyday at a post office, when one person came in hoping to get a check that had not been delivered it was unavailable but my Joey showed up at their house with food money and diapers...and her glowing smile.
If you ask Parker and Johanna what their dad always told them they might roll their eyes and say "sometimes life isn't fair". All three are beautiful wonderful adults making their own way, and I love them.
