That's all you have to do. You don't have to spend the day picking up garbage on the beach, or plant a peace tree, or speaking to your kids about bullying in schools.
If anything, talk to your kids about that day. To the appropriate extent, tell them the details. It is not a pretty story, but it is the truth. Don't let any politician tell you how to "celebrate" 9/11. In California, one man gets murdered - Harvy Milk - and a day is established to honor that individual and his accomplishments as a gay man. 3,000+ people are murdered and leaders want you to turn it into a day of service.
Every day should be a day of service to those who merit it. For today, these are the names that are important.

Guys like Vern don't want us to remember 9/11 for fear that it will renew traditional American resolve and values, and from self-loathing that they cannot bring themselves to feel the same.
