My dear friend, Leanne "Oh-My-God-It's-Fixin'-To-Storm-I'm-Calling-Down-An-Anointin'-From-Jesus" Hebert, who traveled with me for 2200 miles when I moved from California to Tennessee, and the fact that we're still friends after that is a testament to her patience, told me about a practice she follows.
If I remember the story correctly, her mother wanted to buy a REAL Christmas tree for the holiday, rather than follow her father's desire to get the Sears plastic job and save money each year. So her mother started this tradition:
1. Buy a piggy bank, preferably one with only the slot and no other opening.
2. Every Friday night, empty whatever is left in your wallet - bills and coins - into the pig.
3. When it comes time to acquire your goal - smash it open.
According to Leanne, her mother would have more than enough for the Christmas tree, with leftovers to buy some gifts and make Christmas special. Leanne uses it for her summer vacation - Penelope pays for her needs and then a new Penelope is acquired and the program starts again.
It's Friday - feed the pig.
