Last night the DigiHusband and I took a walk through part of our "back four." Our property is just over five acres and roughly is divided between one acre of cleared land, where the house and lawns sit, and four acres of woods - hence my terminology "back four" instead of "back forty."
I plan on clearing out the rough trails that go through it. The original owner made them by riding ATVs through the property, which sounds like a helluva good time. For now, though, I have named the topmost trail "Liars Lane," in honor of my BFF - she and I are "liars" (lawyers). Plus I like the allieration.
Liars Lane opens out into a meadowed hill. The back part of the woods is bounded by meadowland on two sides since it is an easement for the local utility's gas lines. Our corgi, Josie, pauses to make sure I am following her.
Wild blackberries abound on the property. If anyone has a good recipe for cobbler, let me know. Or preserves. Since I don't know how to can, at the very least I am going to see whether I can freeze them for winter.
This is the view from the first meadow. I call it Smoky View Ridge because on a clear day (there was a little haze last night), you can see across the valley to the Great Smoky Mountains. The CAT belongs to the utility company - thanks to the persistence of the neighbor, Charlie, they will be filling in the depression left by their gas line so as to smooth the hill. If we get enough snow this winter (not a usual thing), expect me to buy a Flexible Flyer and relive my childhood days in the Bronx here.
Josie waits on the property line - the grass beyond belongs to our neighbors, Charlie and Sandy. She did not want to head back through the woods, and neither did I for that matter (I was wearing sandals and I prefer to walk through brush with shoes and long pants, so that will be some photos for another day.
