The Milk of Human Kindness

I just don't see this as prurient. However, it would be interesting to know people's reaction if, say, this was a woman who was evidently not so affluent, or not White and young. What if it were a 40-year-old mestiza, nursing her fifth child, with a lined face and her other four children grouped around her? How would people react then?

What do you think?

Updated: it occurs to me that someone might think I just went ahead and took this shot of what was intended to be an intimate moment. Not so. This woman was participating in a public "nurse in" that was being held on the doorstep of a Cost Plus in Orange, CA. Last week, a woman starting nursing her baby in that store and was asked to leave. Although the store management later apologized, a friend of this woman organized this event to raise awareness of breastfeeding and to make it more acceptable in public. This woman was aware that there were a number of cameras about and was sitting, literally, steps away from the front door of the store.

Did she know she was being photographed?

She was aware of a number of photographers and media that were there.

Dymphna, I am not being evasive. I do not know specifically if she knew that I was photograohing her at that moment. A couple of the ladies she was with spotted me. As I said, there were a number of photographers and cameras there.

I don't think she has an issue with being photographed.

Uhm, she was freely participating in a public display of sucking, in order to dramatize what participants believed to be an injustice perpetrated against one of their nursing sorority.

How the hell does a privacy issue come out of that?

I think it's a great shot, Digi.

Maybe it's the 13 years in Italy, but I really do not see how your shot could possibly be considered prurient.

You were clearly shooting in vivo.

The child's grabbing the necklace suggests the tension between playful innocence and ravenous desire.

It is Augustinian in effect, I think.

Can you play with your gadgets to clear up the focus of the 2p woman and child - I like the way the two mother-child pair appear physicially proximate, almost intimately so, even as their attentions are utterly elsewhere.

Sorry, LD, the second woman has been lost to bokeh forever. What I mean to say, she is not in the depth of field and even Photoshop cannot make what is shot as blurred to be in focus.

And I do not think Dymphna meant anything by her comment. It is a fair question and I added the update to the text for the photo after thinking about it. If this woman were with a friend and had found a private corner to nurse, that is to be respected and I would not have taken a photo. The fact that she was there specifically to nurse in public meant she was fair game, if not willing game as well.

Beautiful image. Beautiful moment. I miss those days with my little one.
Kudos to her for sharing this moment with the world.

Yes, Digi - and apologies to Dymphna for the warmth of my response.

I read through the thread after the addendum, and did not notice it was an addendum.

Keep up the great work.

Women beastfeeding is a thing of beauty.

i would encourage mothers that need to breastfeed their children with an area just for them, something comfortable.

If we can provide a gazillion handicap parking places for people that can get their doctor to sign for their permit, we can take care of mommies.

Hooray for breastmilk!

Down with formula.

Is it just my imagination, or do women have cajones now?
