When children mug for the camera, it almost always looks forced/awkward. Proof: school portraits. Candids are best unless you are exceptionally skilled at getting children to pose.
FFP is just adorable...... no matter what photo you take of him.

I think my children are best photographed when they don't know the camera is being focused on them.
