Word on the street is that tomorrow they will be announcing that Roger Cardinal Mahoney of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will be replaced by Archbishop Jose Gomez of San Antonio.
Interesting, replacing Mahoney with an Opus Dei trained priest. Me gusta mucho.

Is that supposed to take effect immediately? I thought it was another year before Cardinal Mahony has to tender his resignation.
Anita, I don't know. Earlier this year they had announced that they found a replacement and that Mahoney was definitely out next year.
Well, as L.A. is my native archdiocese, I hope it gets a really good shepherd very soon.
I think if I were the incoming archbishop, my first official act would be to have the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels as scrap metal. (It already comes pre-demolished.)
Don't they usually bring the new one in before the old one goes by-bye? That's what they did where I live.
Nan, not necessarily. See Ed Peters' tables of U.S. bishops, including three canonically vacant sees. And in my own diocese, I seem to remember that we had a period of some months before we got our current bishop, during which time one of our retired priests acted as administrator of the diocese. Still, I don't think Pope Benedict is keen on allowing sees to remain vacant for long periods.
By the way, those tables I linked to contain the dates when bishops turn 75 and are required to tender their resignation, as well as bishops who are serving beyond their 75th birthdays.
Hey, is that you leading the conga line?
it's spelled "Mahony" ...
With the big diocese, they seem to want to bring in a co-adjutor about six month to a year earlier.

Well Digi, word on the street was right. There must be much wailing and gnashing of teeth among the libs/ I wonder whether the faculty of St. John's will follow through on their threat to resign.
Will there be a trial for Mahony the phoney?
I hope the incoming archbishop didn't touch no kids...I've lost a lot of trust in the catholic church... Shit I wouldn't even have my children hanging around priests, monsignor, bishops, cardinals, etc.... Fucking pervs...
