All that motoring is contributing to traffic jams and pollution, according to state Sen. Alan Lowenthal (D-Long Beach), and on Thursday he won Senate approval of a proposal he hopes will prompt cities and businesses to reduce the availability of free parking.
"Free parking has significant social, economic and environmental costs," Lowenthal said. "It increases congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.’’
So the already economically struggling family will be forced to pay for parking at a grocery store (which, by the way, is the norm is wealthier parts of Los Angeles)?
Shit, why stop there? Go on and force hospitals to do the same.
I have a pet peeve about paying for parking. I recently started my own law practice and I will never have an office where people have to pay for parking, even if I validate it for them. There is something psychologically demoralizing when you are going to see a lawyer and you're already worried about money, and you have to pull one of those little tickets out of the machine.

I commented on FB, we had to pay the meter at the ER in Toronto while there for World Youth Day 2002. Had to run out and feed it every 30 minutes ($1.50) while we waited 3 hours to be told. Then we were told we couldn't get treated because we didn't have a "card".
Will stop shopping at places that charge me to park....how's that for your economy?
Typical Demo social engineering Bravo Sierra.
Agreed.
Have you checked out two of the OC's largest hospitals?
The taxpayers have already paid for the huge parking structures at UCI Medical Center, but there are no-nonsense parking folks collecting fees for time increments or portions thereof.
St. Jude has moved its public access door to the ER to a congested traffic area and paid parking.
I already pay excise taxes to my city for having a car, but yet I still have to pay for parking like a non-resident when I'm downtown. And they wonder why downtown has such a problem being revitalized, compared to the shopping malls in the suburbs.
Brava, some of these rat-****er politicos are SO out of touch it's frightening -- and they are making the laws with a bunch of other yahoos.
Throw all these SOBs out.
I also have a pet peeve about "pay for parking." Sheesh -- and like you, I don't even particularly care for validated parking.
It reminds me of New Jersey, where you have to pay some fricken guy in a toll booth every 500 yards or so.
Makes you want to steal a tank and do some DAMAGE....starting with running over the cars of imbecile politicians.
Get the lit torches and pitchforks.
It never occurs to these dumbbunnies that sometimes people would drive out of their way (using more gas, you know) on principle. Sheesh. I suppose they expect us to carry home the daily provisions on our heads like some barefooted Hottentots!
Mercifully, I live within easy walking distance of a good supermarket, and parking is free in most parts of my metro area - it is the Motor City, after all. That said, call me ornery, but I would readily drive further to avoid paying for parking. It *is* demoralizing. It's like my aunt said, back in the day when you had to mail in your bills instead of paying them online: it's bad enough they want my money for the bill, but why should I have to pay for the stamp? :-p
And don't get me started on New Jersey - they even charge you a toll to LEAVE. That's just evil.
In Spokane when there is a special event like the Lilac Parade, the local lots jack their prices up. Last year we paid FIFTEEN DOLLARS to park for 1 1/2 hours!!!!!!!!!
My solution? No more Lilac Parade.
IN Toronto canada, you have to pay for parking at all times. even if you are going to the ER.
I hate paying for parking too...hence why i don't go to DT LA, or anywhere where I need to pay for parking. I don't even pay for parking at school, period. No permits, nothing...Just annoys me beyond all belief...Karen, I'm thinking about using my connections to get a tank, I'm running over Obama08 cars and toll booths :)
