“I have thrilling news to share with you below but first some seriously bad news: With 10% of our church family out of work due to the recession, our expenses in caring for our community in 2009 rose dramatically while our income stagnated. Still, with wise management, we’ve stayed close to our budget all year. Then… this last weekend the bottom dropped out.
“On the last weekend of 2009, our total offerings were less than half of what we normally receive - leaving us $900,000 in the red for the year, unless you help make up the difference today and tomorrow.”
What happens if he doesn't make it? God was gonna kill Oral Roberts. Finally got around to it, too.
I love you so much. It is a deep privilege to be your pastor.

I had the most fascinating conversation with one of my teen's friends, who is Prot. and went to Mass with us on Christmas eve: "Mrs. H, do I need to bring money?" "No dear." "At our church, you HAVE to give money when you're there. That's something our pastor ALWAYS talks about." "Well, we don't directly pay our priests' salaries. We don't hire/fire our priessts." "Oh, that is a much better system. Our pastor has a lot of money....which I guess is OUR money...."

Pastor Rick has quite a bit of personal wealth. Why doesn't he clear those books himself?
In fairness to Rick Warren, since his books took off, he stopped drawing a salary from his church, and he and his family have "reverse tithed" - given 90% of their book income to the church and lived on 10%. Unless that's changed.
That said, I won't be cutting a check to Saddleback any time soon...
