Christmas 1967 Breakfast

More vintage Christmas! The aftermath of Christmas breakfast in the basement of our house on Perry Avenue in the Bronx, where I grew up.

From left to right: my grandparents, Michael and Wanda Koretzky; my Mom, Dorothy Martin; my great-grandfather, Stanislaus Witowski (Wanda's father).

Note the large kielbasa in front of Tata (we called him that because that is what my grandmother called her father, naturally, in Polish). Also, if you are wondering about the liquor bottles, any holiday table - regardless of the meal - in a Polish household had a few bottles of whiskey ever present.

I feel like we are at least distant cousins. We have called my Dad TaTa since we were kids though he has since been promoted to Dzadjie. The scene reminds me of big Polish weddings "back in the day" when the bottles would be in the center of the table (usually on a Schaeffer or other beer tin). I also remember these big black ash trays emblazoned with the local undertaker's name and phone number with the quote "ashes to ashes". Sto Lat Digi and thanks for sparking another great memory.

Damn skippy there was a whiskey bottle or two on the table! And kielbasa. And mushroom soup, and halupkies, perogies and homemade bread. Lots and lots of homemade bread. And kiffles.

we kids even had a bit of whiskey too. My grandmother always gave us a little splash of whiskey, plus a lot of gingerale on top for any big family dinner, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New YEars and Easter. Like clockwork.

Seagram's 7 was grandmother's nectar to me. I have always been partial to highballs. Now they'd probably arrest her for "child endangerment."

Sheesh.
