Last night was my parish's annual Samoan luau. I missed last year's due to illness, but I was able to make it this year, and glad I did. I had a good time and enjoyed the entertainment.
It was also gratifying to see that Samoan communities from other Catholic parishes came out to attend. The chief of our community - the lovely Mrs. Nive Brown - was afraid that because of the economy, few people would show and ticket sales at the parish level were down. But people bought at the door and the place was packed.
Let me take a moment to say I really love my parish. We are not a wealthy parish - in fact, we are pretty much cash-strapped - but what we lack in finances, we make up in other ways. We have a lot of spirit and these events are fun because everyone is happy to be with one another.
I spoke with Nive and the Samoan community is quite excited - next month, our pastor, Fr. John Moneypenny, is traveling to Samoa to visit with the extended families of our parishioners there. As Nive explained, this is a HUGE honor for the Samoans and I daresay he will be trotted about and feted non-stop (that is him above, graciously consenting to being led out to hula dance at the luau). My prediction - since it would be an insult to the Samoan culture to say no, he returns with a tribal tattoo.
More pictures of the luau can be seen here (at the time of this posting, they are still being uploaded, so please be patient).
