Because they are just so "fake" they are trying to meet the ever-changing world's ideals. They have bought the lie, that to be happy you must be thin, wear the heels, pretend to be happy, have the house, the car, and the kids--but in their hearts they are just like you and me--they are searching for love.
They buy the latest knick-knak on QVC and wonder why the materialism that promised so much happiness, leaves them so empty. So they buy the next latest knick-knak.
What's different about them and us, is that they honestly believe the lies, and can't seem to understand why they are doing all the "right" things, but are NOT happy. Because the world is lying to you, and you believe them--hello!
What is makes you so uncomfortable about them, is their underlying dishonesty.

I am still trying to figure out why someone would wear heels to a party in a park.
