This was brought to my attention by a comment made over at Knowledge is Power.White House officials said the purpose of the flight was to update the official photo of the plane, known as Air Force One when the president is aboard.
If that was the purpose, they did a real shitty job.
Look at the picture released by the White House today. Look at how the photographer - in one of the escort jets - got the glare off of the jet's canopy and, at the bottom, the edge of the canopy. And note that it is a shot of the Statue of Liberty looking out over New Jersey - rather than the skyline of New York City, which would have made this a much more dramatic and recognizable picture.
In short, a picture taken by an amateur, and not an official White House photographer.
Which raises the question - was this flight really for a photo op? Or - who was on the plane? I think the possibility of a joy ride for someone who in the past wrote a BIG check is present.
Please note what I had suggested some weeks ago: "Obama is going to use Air Force One like the Clintons used the Lincoln Bedroom. Be a $upporter . . . and get a plane ride."
I'm just saying . . .

the other question I had was, where is the photographer? In the trailing fighter???
The glare is no big deal. I'm sure it could be corrected with photoshop. (hee, hee)
I bet you are right! I never thought of the rewards perks. Oh - I wanna see Oprah in the weightless plane now - bouncing all over.
I am not a very good photographer and thank you digi for pointing out the quality of this photo. Because my first thought was, that is an awful photo. Followed by "didn't they just take a really good one of it in the Grand Canyon not to long ago?". (I think I saw it here on your blog BTW.)
I can't help but think this pass thru New Yorks skyline was still about something else. Like pushing buttons.
I think that's exactly right. And where were the kids that day, and who all was on the plane.
It's total BS for Zero to claim he didn't know that flight was on. They think everyone is as stupid as the people who voted for him.
As a retired news photog, I have to agree with you. It IS a poor picture.
Wonder if the pilot is as good as Col. Albertazzi, Nixon's "airplane driver"...whose abilities with these huge, heavy craft were flawless.
