New Bishop in Oakland

Pope Benedict XVI on Monday named Salvatore Joseph Cordileone as the Bishop of Oakland, making him the principal voice of moral authority for some 400,000 Catholics in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
Cordileone, 52, had been the auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of San Diego, the diocese into which he was born, attended church as a child and went to seminary.
I wish His Grace all the best, but with the note that this knocks down my hope that he would have succeeded Bp. Todd Brown in Orange, when Brown retires.

Ah, but you never know...you might get someone even better. :-)

How long before Bp. Brown turns 75?

'Bout 2, 2-1/2 years.

Dang it...he brought some good habits (like kneeling at the Agnus Dei, bowing during the Profession, etc.) back to SD. They are lucky to have him up there. Wish he was here.

Well, I know how disappointing it is to see someone you'd love to have go elsewhere...but based on the Holy Father's track record so far, I'm betting you'll get someone good.

You might get Bp. Flores (our newest auxiliary), but my guess is they've got him pegged for something bigger in the long run...wherever he goes next is probably not going to be his last appointment. So I'll say a li'l prayer that you get someone equally good, but who will stay and sort things out there. :-)

Kasia,

Oddly enough, we just got a new auxiliary Bishop here in the OC named Flores!

Seems to be a popular name for Bishops . . .

Well, there goes the conservative hand in SD. Brom is a wishy-washy. Cordileone is a "Roman" - and I think was probsbly instrumental in having St. Anne's Parish in San Diego established as a "person parish" for the Latin Rite.

He's rather orthodox, but not a stick in the mud.

Cordileone is great! He conferred my nephews Confirmation and I was pretty impressed.

As to Brown - our "loss" was your gain but we got Driscoll who's not much better.

My pastor always says that we prayed Todd Brown right out of Idaho...

I'll use my sources for Brown's retirement...

He's a canon lawyer. He knows the law, he follows it, and his Diocese will too. LOVE LOVE LOVE him!!!
