My New Toy and No, I Am Not a Gun Nut

Today I purchased what I term "the Christmas gift I didn't get." It is a 1911 model Kimber Custom II .45 ACP. I have always enjoyed shooting larger calibres and find that I do well with a .45. I had owned a Colt Gold Cup .45 but when I thought about obtaining one to replace it, my cousin Jon (a detective in PA) suggested I go and shoot a Kimber before making my decision. I did so, and thought it was a sweet piece. At the store, one fellow said, "Lemme see what this little lady is buying!" When he saw, his eyes grew wide, he let out a whistle, and then congratulated me on my fine taste in firearms. Indeed.
Now, I realize that the picture above may actually frighten some people. Yes, I wanted to purchase a handgun, given an ever-so-slight fear that Obama could outlaw them, but no, I do not consider myself a gun nut. I bought this for two reasons: (a) I enjoy target shooting, and (b) I want protection for my home. If you buy a gun for either purpose or both, you must be ready to be competent and proficient in its handling. Owning a gun is a serious responsibility.

I read on another blog the proposal that private gun ownership be done away with, and instead the State would keep guns in a repository, to be "checked out", like a library book, when one demonstrates a "legitimate need." Preposterous! It leaves open the question of who determines the need and what happens when that need manifests itself at 2:00 in the morning, should be find yourself the victim of a home invasion. Given the local population and the police assigned to protect it, a 9-1-1 call response is averaging 3 to 8 minutes. Stop to think what can happen in that same time span in a football game - now stop to think what can happen in a situation presenting risk and danger to you and your loved ones.

But more importantly, it removes from the citizenry the means of protecting themselves against the State, should the State become the oppressor. People forget that the Constitution was written by our founding fathers as a protection against a strong, overpowering central government, as was seen in the British monarchy. Thus, it is not without forethought that they felt private gun ownership was so important, that they included it in the second amendment. It is not an amendment to protect us against foreign enemies - it is an amendment to protect our rights against any power that seeks to oppress the states.

Does this mean we all move to Ruby Ridge? Don't be absurd. But never assume what happened in Nazi Germany or Fascist Italy could not happen here. The first thing the State did there was remove the means of the people to protect themselves and enforce their rights. Once that is gone . . . roll tanks.

I look forward to bringing this to the range (of course, I cannot pick it up until the requisite background check is done) and firing it. If anyone in the area would like to join me some time, let's make a date.

Nice weapon!

The gun I carried on the Job was a S&W .45, and I gotta admit I was proud my Department carried it.

My "dream gun" is a Sig Saur .45 I've wanted one for years, and a couple years ago got to fire one again. That sweet little tool had all the kick of a .22 Ruger with accuracy that exceeded my HK.

I've never fired the one you mention, so have no opinion on it.

Anyway, you bring up a good point with regard to our freedoms. When purchased my gun, I was no required to register it, so I never did. I know California requires this, and certainly, I can see good sides to that. But as long as I don't have to do so, I won't. And if my own state passes the legislation to require it, I may determine whether to obey or disobey.

If I was herded into a train by the American SS planned by Obama, no, I wouldn't shoot them; taking out a henchmen is no defense and would be akin to St. Peter cutting the ear off of Malchus. But as I am a woman living alone, I'd like to reserve the right to defend my own honor since there is no one to do it for me. And if someone comes up my staircase in the middle of the night, I want the right to shoot first and ask questions later.

(Knowing from experience that police and fire announce themselves before they break down the door and pound through a house)

And dang it, in the event of terrorism...I demand the Constitutional right to help the Marines and National Guard defend me by defending myself and maybe my neighbors if needed.

I may sound like an extremist here, but I'm not one. I'm just a realist knowing what could happen and wanting the right to make the decision to shoot or not shoot. That's what I've been trained to do.

I don't carry concealed and don't want to. I've been told I"m exactly the kind of person who SHOULD carry...but no, I disagree. And have been thinking of getting rid of the gun. And still might...through legal means, mind you.

Your post makes me reconsider yet again.

So I guess I'll hold off for now.

Um...just to be clear...wanted to say I'm reconsidering keeping the gun, not reconsidering selling through legal means! lol

Dang...Obama in charge, I know Big Brother is watching and so will you defend me when his henchmen come to my house to arrest me for my previous comment? lol

My budget did not allow for a Kimber, but I have a nice XD .40 and a CZ 9 mm.
Adoro, hang onto that baby!

I got my Walther PPK short around the time just before you needed to do whatever hoop jumping waits and checks "the state" wanted. Screw them. I did not understand my Uncle Len's "from my cold dead hands" attitude when I was young. I do now!!! [Not that I was ever waffly on the issue, you don't grow up in a home where your dad and 6 of your 7 uncles were in the miltary, and most of them hunters to boot and come out "soft on guns."] I had a good laugh durning the Rodney King riots when all the white liberals suddenly wanted "to borrow" their friends/families guns for protection. "Uh, sorry, dude, you should have got one before, I need mine for my own 'just in case,'"

I notice those bleeding heart liberals in Vermont have ONE thing right. Loosest gun laws in the country, and the LEAST gun crime.

My dad used to have a Colt .45 ditto a Magnum. Too much kick for my hand personally. I'll stick to the Walther, and .22s are fine by me!

Does anyone happen to be familiar with the following study my cousin told me about many years ago?

I might not have the details wrong, but if it sounds even close to familiar, please point me to the actual info. My cousin, a gun nut (not dangerous, though!) who taught me how to shoot told me about this study involving two towns.

Apparently same level of crime, demographics, etc. In one, they mandated gun ownership, in the other, they made gun ownership illegal.

In the town with mandated ownership, crime went from low to zip. In the town making it illegal, I can't remember..it either went up or remained the same.

As far as the bleeding hearts go...I'm all for background checks, but more as an exercise in virtue than anything else. I don't see it as a deterrant. Someone who wants to kill his wife's lover isn't going to wait 24 hours to commit his crime of passion. His crime will simply go from Manslaughter 1 to Murder 1. But sure, let's offer some hope of conversion in that 24 hours, so let's keep the background check in place in case the neighbor doesn't have a Saturday Night Special handy in the moment of passion. Might deter that guy. But let's be real; guns used in crime are not obtained through gun dealers. So the law doesn't matter in that case.

I'm also very much for education; if you're going to use it or think you might, then you need a regimen of training to help you consider what's behind your target at all times. Being a trigger-happy idiot is not a good defense when you shoot your neighbor's dog while firing upon the shadow of a waving branch in a thunderstorm (which said idiot thinks is a burglar).

So...you get my point. No drinking and guns, no idiocy and guns, but no getting rid of guns just because of a few village fools. Just because our president-elect and the majority of his party is the latter acutally means we need to work harder at defending what rights the Consitution actually gives us.

Sorry...did I say that out loud?

Adoro, though training with guns is good sense in safety of handling them: BE VERY WARY of GOVERNMENT MANDATED PROGRAMS. Because if the government can mandate that, then they can also start putting on other requirements. "To have a gun you have to be trained to sniper level of expertise before we'll give you the okay to buy one."

That kind of crap.

The towns in question are Morton Grove Illinois and Stone Mountain, Ga. And I'm sure you can figure out from what state they are in to "guess" which town required you to have one, and which made them illegal.

The Beck decision was HUGE. What's frigthening is Barrack will get a pick or two on the supreme court. As it is now, that lunatic Kennedy is the swing vote dependning on how he "feels" any given day. Totally unreliable to adhere to strict constructionist. I don't put it past these ba$tard$ to try and get a 2 zillion dollar tax on bullets either.

Isn't it interesting that the first to comment here are all females? And pro-gun?

Of course, as soon as I take ownership, I will have it blessed by my priest. For those who may read these comments and think we've all gone mad, understand that a responsible gun owner does not want to have to use her/his weapon as such unless absolutely necessary.

That's one thing I think anti-gun folks assume - if you're pro-gun, you're pro-blood and relish killing.

And Karen, when I take possession, bring your 22's up here and let's go shooting!

Adoro, I do recall reading that study, but cannot recall the specifics.
Fortunately, in Texas, we have a short wait as they call your info in to check your background, but we get to carry ours out the door within minutes.
My father was military and my grandparents had a farm that we spent time on, so I grew up around and with guns.

I have spoken to some of the gun store owners in my area and MANY more women are buying, but for that matter, there are others who never before, considered owning a firearm in those lines.

My personal weapon is the Sig-Sauer P226 9mm. Comfortable in the hand, nicely weighted...and ALL of my clips are pre-California-stupid 15 rounders. Woo-hoo!.
Adoro...LOVE the 45, too. If I upgrade at some point in time in the future...will probably be that.

Yes, it IS interesting that most of the comments are from women!

Happy to note, Digi, that you understand the REAL reason for the 2A--it ain't for hunters...

Kimber's semiautos have an excellent reputation--you purchased a very fine instrument.

FWIW, one of my offspring just bought a Springfield XD in .45ACP, and it is also a very fine weapon--shoots to point-of-aim with no fuss.

Merry Christmas!

Very Cool! Jim won't let me have a gun--he's afraid I'll "shoot my eye out."--sheesh. (And the fact that I sometimes tend toward a bit of depression--oh, well).

Tara - you made me laugh out loud.

Gem ~ True, but we also have to be balanced in our perspective. The government DOES have an interest in public safety, as they should, however the problem in our age is that the government is going socialist and the propaganda is going left-wing idiocy. They don't HAVE a sense of balance.

Digi ~ It IS interesting how many pro-gun women are hanging out talking shop! lol! I pray to God I'll never have to use it. I have had to point my service weapon at someone, and no, it wasn't fun. It was actually surreal, and maybe the moment I realized we were only a step away from MN Stat 609.066

(Use of deadly force - a stat number I'll never forget because it was drilled into me.)

I am afraid of what's going to happen in the Obama Regime...I'm already saying goodbye to the freedoms we will no longer have after his inaguration.

Yup...just another midwesterner clinging bitterly to my guns and religion. But dang, it's a lot better than empty modern philosophy and dead unborn children.

Digi--

I have to giggle: The Girl gets the Kimber, and I'm looking towards a Bersa Thunder .380!

Adoro said...

IR ~ a .380? When my cousin taught me how to shoot, he handed me a .380 (I'm guessing it was an S&W but I have no idea, can't remember), and told me, "Pull the trigger...and when you think it's going to fire..keep pulling.) That thing reminds me of the tiny gun in Men in Black...LOL! Hope you're a powerlifter! :-D
