Song: Rock-n-Roll N****r
Artist: Patti Smith
Why I Hesitate to Post It: . . . but why I will do it anyway. Okay, folks, the "n-word" is present in this song. I don't want to hear any crap about, "OMG, she placed it right above a video posting with Obama's face on it!" Yeah, I happen to notice he's Black, but so are a lot of folks.
Let me give you some background to this song. I started college at New York University back in 1978. Punk was on the forefront of alternative music, long before you latte-sippin' slackers even wore your first flannel shirt to a Pearl Jam concert. And the High Priestess of Punk was Patti Smith. Good, raw rock and roll. She would be down at CBGB's or The Mudd Club and just perform some music that wiped the brain clean of the disco that dominated the 70's earlier. The economy sucked and the term "n****r" (I use asterisks here for the faint of heart) was not as racially charged because everyone was getting a little rough and living in some 3-story walk-up shit hole, and so that word as well as others such as the "f-bomb" became a regular part of the lexicon. Consider, too, that 1978 also saw the landmark Supreme Court case, FCC v. Pacifica Foundation, which held that George Carlin's "7 dirty words that you can't say on TV" was not obscene speech.
So just sit back and listen to this nigger sing, okay? That is all what this posting is about . . .
