Out here in Southern California, a horrific train collision occurred. The 3:30 Metrolink commuter train to Moorpark/Camarillo collided head-on with a freight train, at about 4:30 pm PST. My God.
I was watching the news last night and it is tragic, especially seeing those people trying to find their loved ones. The wounded were evacuated to a number of hospitals in the Southland, so that no one hospital would have their trauma center overloaded. Fortunately, though, it appeared the medical teams, Red cross, etc, responded excellently, setting up a center at Chatsworth High School, complete with clergy, where people could go and find news.
So far the list of fatalities is at 18. I am afraid it will get higher as they discover more bodies today. The impact literally shoved the engine of the Metrolink train back into the first passenger car, where I expect all of the fatalities occurred. Look at the picture here. The yellow at the top left is the engine of the Union Pacific freight train and just in front of it is a charred portion of the Motrolink engine. As you can see, the rest of the engine - which is just as long as a Metrolink passenger car - is inside the white passenger car lying on its side. Terrible, terrible.
At one point, police officers on the scene formed a cordon and came to attention to render a salute as the body of an LAPD officer was taken from the wreckage. She had been on her way home after her shift.
Eternal rest grant unto them , O Lord. Let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace. Amen. (+)
