That 70's Look

Okay, Kit, we're having too much fun with what to wear to a 70's themed parish family dance! I have been reading the comments below regarding the Cash Bash at St. Joseph's and let's face it, the 70's were HOT for fashion.
Must-Haves for the DigiHusband
1. Porn Start Moustache
2. Puka shells
3. Lapels as wide as the Mississippi
4. Tight, tight, TIGHT Gabardine pants
5. A vest
6. Platform shoes or, alternatively, Dingo boots

Must-Haves for Me

1. "Feathered" hair or set it using washed out, empty frozen orange juice cans
2. A halter neck on my top or dress
3. Huge bangle earrings
4. Blue eyeshadow and lots of it
5. "Babe" cologne liberally applied
6. Platform shoes

Now, that's a disco look and nothing worn can be made of natural fiber. If I'm just planning to have my outfit scream "70's!", there is so much more I can do:

-- Guacho pants with high boots
-- Tube socks! Tube top! Tubular Bells!
-- Shorty-short running shorts on men
-- Satin leisure suits
-- Vintage rock concert t-shirt featuring Kiss, or Peter Frampton, Ziggy Stardust, or the Bee Gees
-- Rainbow suspenders
-- Earth shoes
-- Painters' pants
-- Any piece of clothing with glitter
-- Denim jeans ripped out and converted into a skirt or purse
-- Pea coats
-- Starky & Hutch cardigan
-- Corduroy pants that you can hear coming

What did YOU wear?

Game on!

Keeping in mind that I was a wee lass of single digits back then...remember the floor-length muu-muu dresses? (Think Partridge Family or Karen Carpenter) Yeah. We had some fab nautical numbers with large, red floor-length bows at the waist. Nice, eh? Well, I had to wear 'em TWICE, as my sister is 5 years older. Not working for me by 1981 or so.

I owned several pairs of saddle shoes (black and white), Buster Browns, Hush Puppies, Earth Shoes, and genuine wooden Dr. Scholl's sandals.

And did you ever have "banana curls" hanging down the sides of your face with the rest pulled back in a half pony tail thingie? Mine were artfully done by coiling the hair up around a finger while still wet, then taping said coil to the sides of my head with pink beauty salon tape until dry for Mass the next morning, when the tape (which was like the super-adhesive hair- yanking bandaids they had then) was removed and the coil sprang free...but I hardly cared because by morning I had cervical spine issues and resultant numb limbs from sleeping on the plastic curlers all night.

I also had gauchos, in both corduroy and denim, the latter with stars done in studs and rhinestones AND a matching vest with fringe.

And as the final blow...I was forced to wear Garanimals (WHICH ARE BACK!!!) for a year or so. Thank you, Lord, for that growth spurt in 4th grade.

Digibeloved should leave the shirt unbuttoned but wear one of those snaggle-tooth gold necklaces, and, of course, be sporting a large plastic comb with its tail sticking up out of the back pocket of those tight gaberdines. And some Photogray glasses that don't quite lighten up while inside (like the kid on "That 70's Show).

Whew! A trip down memory lane that makes me want to poke out my inner eye.

PS Don't forget your false eyelashes and your Bonnie Bell rouge gel for your cheeks for that unnatural nuclear sunburn glow....

I loved the wooden Dr. Scholl's - in fact, I should look for a pair now, they were comfy!

I know the 'do you are describing - think Jan in The Brady Bunch, sporting them funky earlocks.

I tried convincing Digihusband to start growing the porn-star moustache, but no dice. El Centavo Malo also balked at the idea when I was having lunch with him yesterday. The school principal, Brad, already has a goatee but says he would bring an Afro pick. Are there no real men left who would dare to wear the 'stache?!

The only man I know who can pull it off...Geraldo Rivera. (I know, I know...but it works for him.)

As I recall my favorite casual wear was a pair of farmer John's that mom mom hated, which made me love them even more. I owned one pair of platforms, but wasn't really into them. I had one calico style skirt that I really liked, avoided corduroy in general except for two pairs of pants I had at different times. For dress up ciana[sp?] material was great. I had two favorite dresses that I wore in the mid and late 70s. And I also had a cotton floral print that was lace gathered at the neck that was very nice. It was the dress I also wore at graduation, and occasionally to class. Oh, I did own one pair of earth shoes, which were great for going back and forth to class on campus .. matter of fact the burlap bag they came in "Roots" I still use to store my baseball glove!

"Farah Fawcett" hair
Skin tight tops
Mini-mini skirts (I had great legs back then)
Musk perfume
Way too much makeup

Oh, were you talking about the 70's, all I can remember was the 60's--they lasted till the 80's.
