While driving to court this morning, I was listening to local talk radio and listened to the host describe how China is trying to "clean up its act" in an effort to put its best face forward for the Olympics this year.
However, as he pointed out, one thing that cannot be overlooked is the fact that China's human rights record sucks, especially with death penalty cases. Presently, there are some 83 offenses that will get you a bullet in the back of the head, including murder but also taking a bribe or stealing a cell phone.
But what interested me is how they treat defense lawyers. Defense for these criminals are routinely beaten and sometimes thrown in jail themselves for challenging a judge's ruling. One lawyer even reported that he was gagged and his mouth taped shut by the judge so he could not defend his client.
To which I thought, well, at least they have low rates of malpractice cases . . .
Maybe it's time for a digivacation, eh?
And the government then charges the family of the executed criminal for the round used!
